My Students

Like most people, teenagers are curious to read things that someone, somewhere has found objectionable. Getting teenagers to read is easy when I tell them that someone doesn't want them reading what's inside the cover! We study censorship and book banning, while reading challenged books.

I have students from all walks of life.

Some of my kids have grown up in supportive homes, where they were read to as children. I have other students who grew up in homes lacking in language development due to poverty and illiteracy. I teach at a public school right outside a major city, so the diversity and low income population is very high. It is unreasonable to expect my students to be able to purchase the newest titles, so I feel it's my job to find ways to provide these for them.

My Project

I am requesting some teen literature titles that have met challenges or bans in school districts throughout the United States. I would like these books because I want my students to have the opportunity to read these novels and make decisions based on literary merit, the qualities of teen literature, and their own experiences. This unit allows students to critically read and analyze books for their worth, while examining the First Amendment and cases of censorship. The majority of these titles have been deemed to have merit and offer valuable insight into the lives of teenagers today.

It is so important to continually engage our young students in reading, and there is no better way to do so than to provide them with engaging, relevant materials.

There is no doubt that the classics are important in our English classes; however, it's important to offer some current titles as well. Students enjoy reading these novels because they see themselves within the pages of the books. They can learn from the mistakes of the characters and recommend worthy titles to others.
