My Students

We want to create a school climate that values effort, success and learning! "Ready-Set-GOAL!"

We are a 650-student elementary school with Pre-K through fifth grade.

We are a Title One school in a rural area. 45% of our students have experienced losses in their family such as separation/divorce, death or incarceration of a family member, or placement in foster care. The hardships our students face provide limited life experiences and exposure to the feelings of success and self-worth.

My Project

"Ready-Set-GOAL!" is a schoolwide program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students will set and complete academic and behavior goals throughout the year. Students will follow age-appropriate applications of SMART goal-setting guidelines, creating goals that are specific, realistic, measurable and timely. These materials will allow children to track their progress toward their goals on a daily basis in a booklet they create. When a student reaches a goal, a host of celebrations will include receiving a bead for his/her "book bag bling" to display the year's accomplishments. This is a ring on the strap of a student's book bag that can accommodate beads to recognize each achievement. Students will redeem a card with their name when they complete a goal. These cards will be displayed on a bulletin board in the main hallway of the school and will be maintained by The Target Club, a collection of fourth grade students.

Our school counselor has researched the concept of motivation and designed "Ready-Set-GOAL!" to engage the aspects of goal-setting that foster and promote lasting motivation.

Our students need a better concept of the connection between planning, effort, self-regulation and success. We are hopeful that this program will create success experiences that promote the good feelings that come from being successful. This will help to build intrinsic motivation which can be lasting and life-long.
