My Students

"Amelia Earhart is important because she flew across the Atlantic and EVERYONE that does that dies." One of my students told me this after reading a short passage on the female pilot. While amusing, this comment served as a reminder that we need to expand our non-fiction library!

All of my students are Latino students from the surrounding low-income neighborhood.

At our charter school, we focus on closing the achievement gap and getting to and graduating from college! “College for Certain!” is our motto. This year, my class demonstrated an average of 2.5 years worth of growth in reading and we continue to find more and more joy in the pages of books.

My Project

My incoming fourth graders are blossoming into avid readers. I do my best to keep up with their passion and maintain an updated library of their favorite books. Yet the ragged bookshelf from my college apartment is no longer suitable for their classroom library. We have happily outgrown it. Unfortunately, our dorm-sized bookshelves force me to keep many of our books in cardboard boxes since they won’t fit on the shelves. We are hoping to create a book lover’s corner in our classroom and we welcome your help in this endeavor!

Our school does not have a library and the local library has been closed for months.

It saddens me that I do not know of a single bookstore in my students’ neighborhood. They know where the liquor store is but have asked me, “What is Borders?" Books should be a childhood pastime for all kids, no matter where they live. Please help me make our classroom library the favorite spot in our classroom by helping us display and organize books of all genres.
