This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If fully funded, our students could become published authors and illustrators with a fully-finished novel to cherish the rest of their lives!

I teach at a small charter school located in the heart of an urban mecca.

We strive to create an ethnically-diverse population where students strive to become scholars, activists, and creators each day. Additionally, we provide our students with small class sizes of 20 students or less. Unfortunately, this means that our funding is reduced significantly and, as teachers, we are often left with limited supplies and resources.

My Project

In order to increase my students' creative writing abilities, our students create modern-day versions of Aesop's well-known fables. Last year, I realized that the students' interest in writing these fables would be increased if they were able to take the project one step further by creating story books that increased their writing skills while providing an opportunity for them to express their artistic abilities. Additionally, they would be able to read these story books to our neighboring elementary students who struggle with reading fluency. This project simply requires a blank book for each student to use in order to create an illustrated story. This project will not only serve my students; it will also increase our sense of community by providing a gateway for our older students to reach out to younger students.

The opportunity for my students to be leaders to their younger counterparts will prove invaluable for their self-esteem while their increased interest will help to improve their writing skills.
