This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Gender wars, deception, alienation, and a love story... sounds like a good drama, right? These are the things behind one of the most famous plays in American literature -- Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.

I currently teach 11th grade English at a small high school in Manhattan, where most of the students come from difficult backgrounds and live well below the poverty line.

In my class, we've tackled classics such as The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye, but these students have not been exposed to great modern drama.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting copies of A Streetcar Named Desire for my students. We will read the play in class, examining the question of whether society impedes the development of natural goodness of the individual or whether society serves as a deterrent to man’s inherent evil tendencies. The students will further examine the play's themes (with an extra emphasis on the role of women in society), literary devices and characters -- things that will help them with the types of analysis expected in college. Students will also complete journal prompts, which make text-to-self connections.

With your help, my students' introduction to modern drama can help them better understand their own lives while fostering a love for language and literature.
