My Students

The emergent readers in my classroom are starting to read everything they can find. As a result, some of the students have completed all the available reading material in our room. These students will really enjoy reading and listening to other great children's books.

My school is located in a high-need community.

The purpose of my classroom is resource assistance for pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade, with a special education focus. However, I also provide scientific, research-based Response to Intervention (RTI)services for students at risk. Some of my students are pre-readers, who are busy working on phonemic awareness, while others are emergent readers with great imaginations.

My Project

My students need 4 children's books, such as "Are You My Mother?" and "Oh My Gosh, Mrs. McNosh!," a student CD player, and a set of Classroom Classic CD Read-Alongs. I would like to establish an in-room mini-library, with some of the great children's classics, as well as some of the more popular titles. I can envision a sunny corner in our room, where I will display the books and the children will visit during their resource time. There will be a special area set up with a listening center, nearby. The children will have the option of having small-group read-along sessions with me as I model fluency; or independent reading time using read-along listening technology. The best thing about this project is that it will be student-driven, and will encourage them to use their imaginations as they hone their reading skills.

Your support will make a "real" difference and help me build a wonderful class library and listening center for the special needs students in my class.

Together, we can lay a literacy foundation for these students, with enjoyable reading and read-along experiences. These books, and the technology to listen to them, will take the students to imaginary places they will remember for a lifetime.
