Many of my students come from non English speaking homes. Building blocks allow all of my students to work and play together without having to use very much English. The children can communicate and play through their building and then gradually learn English.
Most of my students come from very economically challenged homes.
English is not the first language in many of them. Due to a language barrier between my students (four language are spoken in my room ) I need to have many hands on activities for my students. These hands on activities allow my children the opportunity to play with each other without using a lot of English. Building blocks also let my children use their hands and their imaginations to create anything they would like. We then can talk about their creations and build their vocabulary. My students also will have the opportunity to share the building blocks with their classmates and take turns. My school is in a very large, depressed urban area and most of my students have very little to play with at home. Preschool is their only opportunity to be able to use a variety of manipulative's. Every child deserves the opportunity to be able to use and explore a variety of toys and be able to use their imaginations.
My Project
I have visions of my students building a variety of creations with these blocks. I then will be able to tell the children the names for the various structures they have made and increase their vocabulary. What better way to learn words then while using your hands, brains , and imagination. My students will benefit so much from having the opportunity to build what they want to build , the way that they want to! My students will learn how to share at the same time and see what their classmates are building. Wouldn't it be wonderful for several preschoolers to work together to build a city and be learning English at the same time?

They deserve the chance to use their imaginations and build , build, build. With these blocks and the block table my preschoolers will be able to create with their own hands and have so much fun doing it.
