Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a room full of eager and enthusiastic 4th graders all reading engaging texts at their reading level. With 38 kids that may be a challenging job, but with the help of Weekly Reader and Time for Kids, it is possible. They offer relevant current events at a variety of levels.

We are a Title 1 school in southern California that is mostly comprised of English Language Learners.

With the budget cut this year, there are no funds for classroom supplies or reading materials. That puts the pressure on individual teachers to supply their rooms with appropriate materials that their kids can access. This is especially challenging because of the vast array of reading levels and needs that our population presents.

My Project

"Can we keep it?" That is what is typically asked after reading the new, glossy magazines that Time for Kids publishes weekly. Because they offer a few different reading levels on the same weekly topic, it gives us an anchor to deepen conversations.

By donating money to this project, you will be enabling the students in my class to read interesting current events at their individual level.

These magazines will engage them into wanting to read further about the topics and deepen their comprehension about the issues. It will also help foster an environment of inquiry that promotes the research process.
