Social Darwinisn vs Human Compassion

My students need 30 copies of Jodi Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper" for a reading/essay project.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Even AP literature students don't like reading classics all the time. The book I used for this project last year bored my eager readers, and my reluctant readers just skipped it. After much research, I chose Picoult's novel as a replacement, but our school lacks the funding to buy a classroom set.

Over the past 10 years our school has changed from serving an upper middle class district to one in a high poverty area.

The students who enter the AP program are those who are more likely seeking to avoid the loss of time that comes from maintaining discipline in the grade level classrooms. These are the kids who want to be challenged, want to learn, and want to be the leaders of the student body. They are a fantastic and diverse group with heritages that span the globe. They are choir kids, jocks, and the "nerds" who spend lunch reading in a corner, but when they come into my AP Literature class they are a single community, a group that works with and helps one another in every way.

My Project

Because of our high poverty rate, many of our students are more worried about when and how they'll get their next meal or if mom will kick them out again when her "boyfriend" is over. It is extremely difficult to interest these kids in reading. For that reason, our reading scores are very, very low. Because of the low scores and failing grades, the district school board and superintendent focus most resources on remediation projects, leaving very little funding for our fledgling Advanced Placement English classes. Adding this novel to our library of AP-dedicated materials will help me kick off the year-long class with a modern novel by a popular female author who writes with literary merit, an AP requirement. I believe this novel will help to convince my students that they are embarking on an exciting literary odyssey.

This particular project will ask the students to read and study the ideas of Social Darwinism as present by Jack London in The Call of the Wild and contrast that idea with Picoult's message of selfless love and sacrifice.

They will have to analyze the mixed messages of rugged individualism and familial obligations that make up the American Dream. This will deepen their understanding of their own motivations and awake in them a stronger sense of the needs of those around them.
