This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

To further study the foundational concepts of motion & collisions in Physics, model cars provide familiar, real-life science application. Model cars would enhance labs that investigate inclined planes, relative velocity, colliding objects, and tension forces between connected "train cars"

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups. Almost all my students classify in our state’s lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speak at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Since we are not a private school, our science lab programs truly survive from donations or grants-our state and local education funds are facing their worse cuts in over 20 years. Physics classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 42 students per class.

My Project

Physics labs that require students to roll ball bearings or coins along a table surface or down ramps are interesting to students when they first begin the year in Physics, but after several weeks, continued lab work with these objects could become monotonous and boring. Specially designed "toy-like" models of Physics dynamics cars would spark interest in students- adding elements of entertainment and, more importantly, practical applications to their Physic lab work. Our school district's current approved textbook and lab manual has many lab experiments and demonstrations to investigate motion, relative velocity, acceleration, ramps/inclined planes, friction, and momentum/colliding objects. Currently, my students only have coins and ball bearings to work with. In conjunction with sonar motion detectors (another lab item I hope to eventually attain) these cars can greatly enhance my student's Physics lab experience, better preparing them for college level lab work.

In order for me to update and modernize the Physics lab experience for my students, our Science Department must rely on and survive on donations or grants.

The model cars that I am requesting are the plastic economy grade, not expensive metal cars. For this request, I will be able to provide the entire class with car sets. Again, my class currently has no dynamics cars to use in Physics. Anything that you can do to help sustain and improve our program will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
