This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was the best part of the back to school season? Yes! The new school supplies! The smell of new crayons, brand new bookbags, fashionable new outfits (or crisp new uniforms), supplies with our names. This was so exciting for all of us. All who could afford it that is.

My students are bright, eager to learn young children living in New York-a place where there is so much for them to soak in and learn from.

Unfortunately, they also come from low income families and often times cannot afford those basic supplies we used to get so excited about every fall. These supplies seem so minimal but can become a great burden for larger families on a low income. Many times I have found myself collecting supplies from students on the first day of school to store away only to find one or two students with few or no supplies. I would go to the dollar store at lunch time and compensate. Even my mother would donate a few notebooks, pencils and a unisex bookbag to "raffle off" if needed.

My Project

This is where you come in and help. Your donation of simple supplies such as glue, crayons, scissors, homework folders and memo pads will help ease the burden on these parents in this bad economy and will help my students begin this school year with the supplies they need.
