My students need 45 white rats and 4 pregnant white rats for dissection, and a Dissection Lab PPE Pack which includes disposable gloves, aprons, and safety glasses.
I teach 6th grade Science. I am a fairly new teacher and have discovered how difficult it is to afford science supplies. Since it is required that 20 percent of our teaching time be lab based. I have to scrounge for everything, because it takes a LOT of stuff!
I have 100 students in a small, rural, public school in Arkansas, and I want to be sure they have every possible opportunity to experience science and learn to love it.
Many of my students are from farming families. They are surrounded by nature and science, but they often don't realize how much science plays a part in their lives.
My Project
One of the science frameworks for sixth graders is that they are supposed to dissect eyes, lungs, hearts, and other organs. If they could dissect rats, we could learn about several different organs and organ systems from one dissection. Later in the year, we will also dissect owl pellets and study how rodents fit into the food chain. During the rat dissection, we'll examine structural adaptations that enable rats to avoid predators such as owls.
I know this would be an incredibly memorable experience for the students.
I'm 46 years old and I still vividly remember the dissections I did almost 30 years ago. Please help make it possible for my students to have this opportunity as well!
