My Students

The worry of getting stuffed into a school locker is easily relieved once you see how small school lockers are. However, how to manipulate a combination lock, when you've never used one is a whole new worry for rising Middle Schoolers.

We are a public elementary school in rural North Carolina.

My students are approximately 80 - 100 Fifth graders attending a Title I school with approximately 79% of the population on free and/or reduced lunch. Our school serves students in Pre-K through 5th grade.

My Project

Our fifth graders take a field trip to the Middle School they will attend the next school year. During this visit, they tour the school and visit classrooms and teachers. Upon return to our Elementary school, we discuss what questions and worries and anxieties we may have about moving to a new school next year. The biggest worry and anxiety the students have is over how to use a combination lock. They do not have lockers in Elementary school therefore this is a completely new skill for them. By being able to have combination locks to use as a teaching manipulative this new anxiety will be alleviated. The goal for this project is to provide a teachable moment in problem solving to the fifth grade students by how to positively address fears and anxieties by acknowledging what their anxiety is, identifying what the causes of their anxiety is, and then what they can do to help solve their problem. These locks can be used year after year with each new class of Fifth graders.

Appropriate social behaviors are necessary to be successful adults.

Such as appropriately expressing fears and anxieties, and these are some of the character traits addressed in Classroom Guidance by the School Counselor. Also teaching how to use and obtain resources and practice newly learned skills to help alleviate anxiety is a lifelong skill to help them in being positive contributors to society.
