My Students

Ever wonder what life is like in Australia? Where is Timbuktu? What is the largest river in the world? We can explore our world and find the answers to these questions.

My students live in a very small community.

Our school is a K-12 school with approximately 250 students. We live in a very remote area, where students often aren't afforded the opportunity to travel to different areas of the US, let alone the world. Geography and Social Studies helps bring the world to them. Through education we can expose them to various cultures around the world and teach them tolerance and understanding of people different than themselves.

My Project

My students need new world atlases to help them understand the world they live in and to use them during daily geography lessons. I use daily geography lessons and trivia to expose students to different countries around the world. This is in conjunction with their Western and Eastern Hemisphere Studies. I currently have 4 atlases in my room that are dated from 1989. Obviously, the world has changed since then, and these resources are worn out. With 20 new atlases, my students could work independently on their lessons and see the "real" geography of the world around them.

I teach 5-8 grade Social Studies in a small rural school with little funding.

If we could receive new atlases for our room, it would enhance our classroom by giving a realistic view of our world and provide students an opportunity to explore our world's continents, countries, capitals, landforms, etc. Understanding various countries of the world and their cultures brings about a deeper understanding of other people and, hopefully, a peaceful world for all of us to live in.
