National Geographic Magazines For Young Scientists

My students need 20 copies each of 6 various National Geographic books for young readers to read during science time.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ugghhh...textbooks! Who wants to read the textbook and answer the questions at the end of the chapter? Learning science from a boring old textbook is not how I want to engage my young students in meaningful science lessons.

My students are very inquisitive first graders who unfortunately come from poverty and non-English speaking families.

Over 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of them are reading below grade level but have a strong interest in science; specifically plants and animals.

My Project

As you may or not be familiar with, the National Geographic series is well-known for vivid and detailed photographs of nature. Their young readers collection is exceptional because it allows young children to interact with amazing photographs as well as learn interesting facts about science. These paper back books (almost like a magazine) are perfect to keep in their desks and all my students will be able to read them.

I already have few National Geographic magazines in my classroom and my students, year after year, tear through them in excitement.

They love the pictures and quirky facts. The problem simply is that I do not have enough copies for everyone. The only books that I have a full class set of, are our boring textbooks. I know that if each student had the opportunity to read each of the National Geographic books, they would learn so much more than what the textbook could teach.
