This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Close your eyes. Think back to the days of your early music classes. How could your experiences there have been enhanced? Nothing is better than the smiles on the faces of nine year olds as they play chords accompanying some of Beethoven's classics.

The children at our school come from very diverse backgrounds.

Some are being raised in 2 parent homes, and some children are raising themselves. School for many is the only safe haven they know. School is a place where students get two hot meals a day (for some the only time they get to eat), where they know that teachers, no matter how strict, (mean in their books) will always give a loving hug at the end of the day and where they know their voices are heard and accepted.

My Project

These bass bars will add to our Orff Instruments we use weekly in my classroom. These instruments (Mostly which are played with mallets), are used to give students a hands on approach to learning music. Whether playing simple melodies with 3rd graders, or more complex chord progressions with 6th graders, education through music reaches students differently than just textbook learning.

In the past, I have had to omit bass bar parts from my lesson or had to have students play the parts on smaller instruments.

They were unable to hear the entire sounds that should have been taught. With the bass bars, we can finally fill that void.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
