Graphing Calculators - Can't Get Enough

My Students

Do you remember having to learn and practice on equipment that had to be shared with other students because there were not enough for everyone? Becoming familiar and proficient with graphing calculators is very difficult by just observing and not having hands on opportunities.

Most of my students come from low income rural and small town families.

Our school is a central county school that has over 1600 students from 9-12 grade. All of our students were affected by Hurricane Katrina and most have not returned to 100% pre storm conditions. Our state requires that students pass a State Algebra Test and they are expected to be proficient with graphing calculator use. Most of these student cannot afford to purchase their own calculators. Having a classroom set of calculators gives all the student equal footing in the algebra classroom. Many students have a fear of math and the technology. When it becomes available on a daily basis they get accustomed to it and can get past their fears and really start learning.

My Project

Having technology available in the classroom for all of my students to use and learn on will improve their confidence in Algebra and their ability to do well on the State Algebra Test. It is not fair to explain how to use the technology to the students and not be able to give them the opportunity to practice and become proficient before being expected to perform on tests using the technology. These calculators are especially helpful for my special education students that can think through solving problem but have difficulty with computation.

These calculators have a great impact on my students.

It has sometimes made the difference in passing the State Test and graduating from high school. Many have come back and asked to borrow a graphing calculator when they take the ACT test and have improve their scores and qualified for scholarships. When my students discover what they 'can do' with the help of technology there is no stopping them.
