My Students

“I just can’t think of how to write it!” We have heard this time and time again in our third grade NJ inclusion classroom.

When you enter our bright, cheerful class, the first thing most people notice is our safe atmosphere.

Our class is comprised of both special and general education students on a variety of different academic and social levels. Despite our differences, we are a family and everyone in our room is understanding and accepting of the individuals that pass through our door.

My Project

One of the biggest academic challenges we face in our class, is motivating and encouraging some of our students to write. We have tried various strategies such as typing, modeling, scribing, peer conferencing, and numerous others. However, some students simply have a mental block when they have to think of how to phrase something on paper. In order to enable our students’ to successfully complete compositions, we are requesting the Hamilton Digital Camera Explorer Kit. The cameras will allow our students to take pictures of the items they are going to write about and then use the photographs as prompts and visuals. Moreover, the photographs will work as a spring board and allow them to generate more ideas about the given topics. For example, if they have invested the time to photograph the subject, they will be intrinsically motivated to explain their reasoning on paper.

Donating cameras to our class will help our students reach their full writing potential by assisting them in generating ideas and formulating writing compositions.
