My Students

The overall goal of public education is to prepare students to become productive adult members in society. So, what better place to start career exploration than in Kindergarten, their first year of formalized education in the public school system?

My students are Kindergarteners in a Title I public school, meaning the majority of students eat free or reduced lunch based on their socio-economic status.

Unemployment is high in our county so many parents of my students are currently not working. My students need to learn about careers in the community; jobs that are most likely to be available to them if they decide to remain in our area after completing high school. These career awareness tools will help students learn the value of various careers in the community while inspiring them to increase their knowledge of careers and the educational skills needed for future employment.

My Project

With these educational supplies I will be able to teach career awareness to students in an interactive way using multi-sensory learning. I will have a book, puppet, and posable figure for eight different community careers: firefighter, nurse, police officer, baker, farmer, doctor, teacher, and mail carrier. Once students complete the series of eight lessons, one for each career, they will use the art and craft materials to create themselves dressed for a career that is of interest to them.

This project will help my Kindergarteners learn about community careers that may be of interest to them in the future.

It will help them understand the importance of an education and bring more value to their learning experience.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
