My Students

Let's stomp out the senseless excuses and the narcissistic victim syndrome that plagues our nations youth by empowering young people with the opportunity to become proactive rather than reactive.

Many of the students at my middle school are from military families and have at least one family member who is deployed.

Over 50 % are on free or reduced lunch. Many of these students tend to "quit" the minute they begin to struggle. They do not have the support and encouragement outside of school that they need to stay with a challenging task and follow it through to successful completion. The consequence of this is that most of them suffer from a low self esteem and a severe lack of personal empowerment. They are quick to shun responsibility for their negative actions even when it involves an unjust punishment to their peers. My students want to learn and they are hungry for knowledge but they lack the ability to overcome the stresses of youth and the influences of their own comfort seeking minds.

My Project

One of the central tenets in the book that I am asking for is that there are two types of people in the world - the proactive and the reactive, those who take responsibility for their lives and those who blame, those who make it happen and those who get it happened to. Covey points out that while we cannot control everything that happens in life, we do have one thing we can control: how we respond to what happens to us. The students will be using the books and the workbook to gain the skills of success at the beginning of the year as a unit curriculum. They will then have to apply those strategies by examining the success and failures of some of the most significant people of the past.

By donating to this project, you will be supporting my students in developing the habits of mind that they need in order to navigate challenging circumstances.

You will be helping them understand and practice the techniques of successful individuals and provide them with the opportunity to learn about self empowerment. In short, your contribution will help them prepare for LIFE, and not just a passing score on a standardized test.
