My Students

Do you remember those many days spent writing research papers? Thank goodness today they can be more project based without losing the rigor behind the research. Creating a virtual museum allows each to share the findings with peers in a creative interesting way.

My students are in a rural area where visits to museums usually consist of a walk to the computer lab.

Yet, these have opened many doors to worlds of knowledge. These students embrace their own culture and take pride in it. Yet at the same time each dreams and fantasizes about worlds yet unseen to them.

My Project

My students need microphones to record docent talks for the virtual museums each has created. Also we request a binder to hold the research required and cds to burn the digital museum media. In this activity students will pick a person or group that has had a sudden impact on society. This person or group is connected to a major theme or idea. Students research and get to know the background, motives, and impacts made by these individuals. Next, they create a virtual museum using PowerPoint, Movie Maker, or Storybook. Then using recording software each records a docent, tour talk to guide views through the history and impact of the museum.

The Sudden Impact gives the depth, complexity, and meaning that is missing in so many classroom projects.

It also allows students to take ownership in his or her own work. The range of possibilities opens doors to creativity and expression. It also gives meaning to how the world evolved socially through history.
