My Students

Our students come from all over the city. They arrive with all levels of academic achievement-- most very low. By the time they reach me at 11th grade, they take all of their classes for college credit.

Our charter school sits at the center of an urban redevelopment project in Indianapolis.

We are one of only a handful of high school level accelerated schools in the nation. Our students come from all corners of the county for our college preparatory program, and no student is turned away. Our mission is to provide a rigorous college preparatory curriculum for all our students, regardless of their previous school experience. When our students graduate, they have a year of college credits and a letter of acceptance from a major university. I teach the 11th and 12th grade English classes, for which my students earn college credit if they pass with an A or a B.

My Project

When my students reach the 11th and 12th grade, they are in the Early College program. They take college classes, and they are expected to write...a lot. For their first semester English classes alone they have over 80 pages of formal writing that must be produced on a word processor. They are expected to turn in drafts and final projects that are typed. Students are expected to submit their finished pieces for publication outside of our school. We have the computers. We have the talent. We have one printer, but we have grown-- quickly. In the next year our Early College program will double in size and in two years it will triple.

In order to publish quality work, our students need a reliable printer.

A printer that won't crash when it gets requests from several sites on the network. A printer that won't complain when it is asked to print several hundred pages in a day. A printer under warranty in case something DOES happen. Our students have adopted the motto "College or Die!!" Perhaps a bit morbid, but they deserve a printer that lives up to that same level of dedication.
