Mr. Greene's classroom raised $535

All Work and No Play...

My students need playground balls, footballs, jump ropes, basketballs, and soccer balls.

My Students

Did you know one out of every five children is obese? Why? Too much candy in their diets? Sure, I mean we fry candy bars now for goodness sake- does a Snickers need more calories? Not enough exercise? Exactly. Kids are trading baseball gloves for video games and jump ropes for the television remote

My third graders are on a mission to not become a statistic.

They are fully committed to a whole lifestyle makeover. They understand to be healthy it takes balanced eating and exercise. Well, we have rules at our school that do not allow for sugar-laden, fattening snacks, so that's half the battle. Our only problem is we have no equipment to use during recess and P.E. My class has taken on the community service task of playground equipment managers. Almost weekly they come and ask me, "What are we supposed to manage? There's nothing in the shed!" The lack of equipment has been nice in the sense that I really get to see my kids' creativity tested to the max, but is that what I want for my kids? A school with no sports equipment. It's not, but I can only spend so much. Our school is at 50% free or reduced lunch. We have kids from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. They often bring in balls from home, but if they don't have anything at home, then we are right back in the same boat.

My Project

Some kids know exactly what they want to be when they grow up. For some it's a basketball player in the NBA, a football player in the NFL, or a soccer player in the World Cup. But, what about those who don't want to be a professional sports player at all? What about the kids who want to play a different game each day? This project is for the kids who like to experiment and enjoy some variety. Sure, they strive to live healthy and enjoy getting some exercise, but they don't want to be locked into one sport. This project gives our school a variety of sports equipment for those kids who want to be healthy, have fun, and enjoy being a kid. My kids will grow so much from participating in team sports. This equipment will improve their teamwork, their communication, and their ability to coexist with one another. That is what we need in our world. We need people who know how to get along with others. I cannot think of a better way to train kids to do this than with sports.

I am so passionate about this project because it won't just affect my class.

It will reach our entire school; over 300 students will benefit from this project. You can give my students an opportunity to perform their community service project as Equipment Managers. This project will allow my children to be more active and start a habit of healthy living that will last a lifetime. 20% of our kids are obese. How do we fix it? Can we end childhood obesity? I'll try my best, but I can't do it alone.
