My Students

Maintaining a music program requires large amounts of community and parent support. Costs arise from uniforms, trip expense, increase in music for each child/performance as well as day-to-day maintenance of the equipment and storage. Our folders are 5- years old and are showing use.

My school has a 43.5% free & reduced lunch student population.

Many of the homes are single family or the transient population is growing due to a land-locked situation in the Indianapolis area. I have been teaching at my school for 25 years and feel we do great things on a limited budget. I pursue fund-raising, grants and support where I can to keep the costs of offering a quality program down for our students. I am blessed to have an administration and parent organization that support the Arts and understand the benefits of such offerings; however, state budget cuts have made a recent dent in our funding and spending. Please help us maintain the music for current and future use by assisting us in the purchase of new folders for classroom and concert use.

My Project

The "Behind the Scenes" expenses definitely don't receive the applause, but are vital to the success of a music program. One of the challenges I face, as the director, is the purchasing and storage of musical repertoire. These folders may not be the most essential part of the program, but in the classroom we are currently using 5- year old folders that are showing their 'wear' from daily use. I am very proud of such opportunities for my singers, such as performing with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, producing a Holiday Nutcracker, & participating in their 32-annual Spring Spectacular. I must be frugal in all aspects of finances in order to offer such quality programming. But what I am teaching is more than music; what you will be supporting is more than materials. Many of our students find themselves through performing: They learn their strengths; they see themselves as 'worthwhile' & their talents are cultivated while they gain aspects of cooperation, tolerance & teamwork.

This is my first project request on DonorsChoose.org.

I am excited about the possibilities and as I am writing, I am already thankful for those potential donors. The 'thanks' comes annually from the seniors who leave us and say that these opportunities have changed their lives. Music has given them a reason to stay in school or a release from a life that isn't always so positive. My job isn't to create musicians; my job is to create healthy, well-rounded people!
