My Students

"Give us a hand, not a hand-out," as the saying goes, and our high school students need supplies to use as they raise funds to pay for their enhanced field study trip to Europe. This motivated group wants to give the community a healthy taste of the Continent while raising the funds themselves.

Our high school students are located in a very rural county on the north coast of California.

Many of our students never get the opportunity to leave the county, let alone the country. Next year, the world languages students have an opportunity to extend their classroom education by attending an enhanced field study trip to Europe in 2011, but as many of these students come from families who are economically-challenged, their only chance of going is to raise the funds through community fundraisers. Our group has decided it wants to raise the funds while giving the community a taste of the Continent by selling crepes, Gazpacho, and Bierocks, foods representing the countries to where they will travel (France, Spain and Germany). This is a group of the most bright, determined, and motivated students I have seen in many years of teaching who would rather earn their own way than ask for money from others. My Project

As I stated earlier, our students want to earn their own way to Europe. They have created a list of many community fundraisers designed to bring in as much money as possible, and many of these high school students will be working extraordinary hours to accomplish their goals. But their task is an awesome one. They will take advantage of various community events and gatherings to sell crepes, Gazpacho and Bierocks, including the Fourth of July event, the weekend Grower's Markets, and the County Fair. The will make presentations to the Chambers of Commerce, Soroptimists, Rotary International, Kiwanis, and other organizations. They will hire themselves out for social events. What is so cool about this is that these students will be learning skills that they will keep the rest of their lives, including running a business, healthy cooking, leadership, public speaking, a dedicated work ethic, socialization skills, cooperation and world unity. What more could we ask of our youth today?

It seems so easy to just ask for a hand-out these days, and one of the biggest complaints about youth today is how they don't want to work for anything.

This is a group of students who are completely putting those thoughts to shame as they seek to earn $48,000 in the next year to go on an enhance field study in Europe. We can all be proud of this kind of dedication and determination, and reward it with our support!
