My Students

Students read more when they get to choose what they read. Literacy lab students are encouraged to pick the book they want to read from the classroom library. More books from which to choose will give my students more chances to read.

My students attend a small rural school of less than two hundred students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Over 60% of our students participate in the free and reduced lunch program. Most students participate in sports, basketball, softball and baseball. They are an energetic group with a need for interesting books readily available to keep them wanting that next book.

My Project

My students and I are just beginning a new literacy lab class. This type of class will be new to all of us. A class library with many books will encourage them to read and then respond to their reading. The students will be able to learn of other cultures and time periods different from their own. They will be able to read books for entertainment. Some of these students never leave this small area but with these books will be able to travel to the far reaches of the world. They will also learn to improve their writing skills. The students will use the writings of the authors to learn new vocabulary and writing techniques.

For students to want to read, they must have many books from which to choose and those books must be readily available.

A classroom library with many books available at any given time is the best gift to give a student they may otherwise struggle with reading. To watch the face of a student as he/she finds that book that turns them into a lifelong reader is the best gift to give to a teacher.
