My Students

Part of kindergarten is learning about yourself and your community. This is when you first start to hear, "When I grow up, I want to be..." But, young children need to first learn about careers that are out there, what they can aspire to be!

I teach at a charter school in a low-income, high-crime neighborhood.

Besides the school year, the students are in school for the whole month of July! I have always taught first grade, and this coming year I am teaching kindergarten for the first time. It will be a newly opened class that does not yet have furniture, games, supplies, etc. I want my kindergarten students to walk into a classroom full and rich with learning materials. We will study community and community workers for the first 4 months of school. I have no supplies or materials yet. I want these five-year-old students to really feel what it feels like to be a doctor, artist, police officer, firefighter, etc. We will take trips to see these workers in action. But when we get back to the room, students need to be able to dress up like the workers and pretend to be them. Hands-on learning is really the only way to go in kindergarten.

My Project

With this donation, we will have ten dress up community worker outfits and a place to store them. My class will have puzzles and books about community workers. This will make it possible for us to spend our afternoons having exploration time, where students split up into centers and study community workers, by dressing up as them, pretending to be them, writing about them, reading books, completing puzzles, etc. We will thoroughly learn about ten different community workers. This will allow the students to begin to think about what they can do when they grow up. This is important in a neighborhood where the crime rate is high and the high school graduation rate is under 50%. These children need to have a dream.

This project is essential to my classroom.

I have no materials or books to study community workers and that is what we will study for four months. My school can not afford to buy these materials, yet without them, I cannot complete this interdisciplinary unit. I will use these materials for years and years to come. By helping to make this a reality, you are affecting the lives of hundreds of children. One day, they will be the doctors, police officers, librarians, and chefs of our country!
