Do you remember what it was like when the teacher introduced a new book, and you just couldn't wait to get your hands on it? How disappointed you were, to discover that the other 27 students in your class had the same idea? It seems like my students spend more time waiting than reading.
My 3rd grade prospering poets live in a small agricultural community with a high population of migrant families.
Many of our students are either migrant or from low income families. These circumstances tend to make it so my students do not receive a lot of exposure to books outside of the school day. Even though we have a wonderful Public Library in town, a large number of my students live in the country and are not able to make good use of the services the library has to offer.
My Project
Please don't make them wait... put a Prelutsky book in their hands. I need 28 copies of "My Dog May Be A Genius" by Jack Prelutsky. My 3rd grade prospering poets love Prelutsky poems. With a class set my students would be able to share a favorite poem while their classmates read along. They really enjoy hearing their classmates read poetry. It is such a joy to see students laugh and giggle together over a silly poem. A good number of these students don't have a lot to laugh and giggle about these days. Many of them are struggling readers. Listening to and reading poetry seems to make them feel like readers. Not to mention they want to read the poetry and really work at it. Therefore, improving their reading skills. I was so excited when they begged me for more copies. With the class set of "My Dog May Be A Genius", students would be able to borrow a book, and share their favorite poems with family. Exposing them to a wonderful genre and hopefully a love of books.
Please don't make them wait for a book, they really want to read.
I need 28 copies of My Dog May Be A Genius by Jack Prelutsky. When children crave a book, we know they will read it over and over again. The struggling readers in my Prospering Poets class need this book. The more they practice reading the better readers they will become. Why not give them a book they are craving, instead of a laborious, and for them, not very exciting book. It's a sure thing.
