My Students

"It could be really nice out here!" The building planners had an obvious vision when they designed our amphitheater-style courtyard, but that vision has gone the way of weeds and disuse. We want to make our old courtyard into a great outdoor classroom, but we need help - your help.

Our small school is nestled amongst acres of farmland.

It's beautiful and quiet here, but the school is very small (<400 students, 7-12) and most of the students are in serious financial need. Our kids are hunters and fishermen. They like to hike and ride their quads in the woods. In an area where most people are scrambling to make a living, it's often difficult to convince the students that science is worth learning. When you take them outside, though, everything changes. Students are never be able to sit still in a calm, quiet classroom follow and listen with rapt attention when you get them into the great outdoors. It's counterintuitive, but it works and I want to keep making it work for us.

My Project

Our founding fathers had the right idea. Just outside my window is an extra-large courtyard with amphitheater-style seating just begging to be used. Unfortunately, it has fallen to disrepair. The wooden benches are rotting, the light fixtures are dead, and the bird houses and feeders are long gone. The birds, ever persistent, try to nest, but their young consistently fall prey to bigger birds in the absence of bird houses to protect them. The weeds are above the head of even the tallest student now; it resembles a jungle more than a classroom. We have the manpower to make it better. Our ecology group is almost 30 students anxious to get started making a place where they can learn in the fresh air and sunshine. A local trade school has agree to come out and help us with our vegetative renovation. What we need, is the tools and supplies to get us started and there. . .we're falling a little short.

There's nothing worse than letting the excitement and momentum for a great project die because of lack of funds.
