Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has no program in financial literacy or even Economics! We have a semester business and law class to fulfill our Economics requirement. But that's it! This situation is even more tragic since our school is in the South Bronx, which is one of America’s poorest congressional districts.

Our school is a Title I, low-income school located directly next to a jail in the South Bronx, one of the nation’s poorest congressional districts.

Like many students nationwide, they have few financial literacy skills. Nationwide, financial literacy is a long lost subject. Only three states require at least a one-semester course devoted to personal finance, while 30 states have no requirements at all. And our school is no exception. We have very few programs for financial literacy. We have a semester long business class in our students' senior year and maybe a couple lectures on college scholarships. There is no Economics class, no financial planning, no workshops on opening up savings accounts, no guest speakers, no educational partnerships with financial institutions. This is tragic, because most of our students live in poverty. Many of our students and families are recent immigrants searching for success in the land of opportunity. Yet we do not have the resources to help.

My Project

We need a financial literacy program. This would include financial planning, college financing, home economics, and career savings. This will be an in-class and after school program. There are numerous programs that are free to teach financial literacy such as the High School Fed Challenge, the Economy Bowl, the Stock Market Game, and other programs sponsored by such organizations as the New York Financial Literacy Coalition. However, to take advantage of these programs, students need access to a computer. There are an infinite number of online financial literacy programs, resources for students, resources for teachers, online competitions and prep materials. Also, when it comes to setting up bank accounts and tracking the stock market and interest rates, purchasing stocks and other financial skills – we need computers during class and after school to do this. I remember my favorite lesson in high school was when our class did a month long online stock market challenge.

Our students get ripped off at the local bodegas and supermarkets.

Our students' parents who many have limited English skills get ripped off by stores and banks. Our students get scared by college costs. Our students and many families lack savings accounts. There is too much teaching for test skills, and not enough teaching for life skills. We want to change this. Since we don't have the staff or class to do this, we have to bring online learning to our school to provide financial literacy.
