My Students

I am facing a challenge that happens every few years. Our State Board of Education changes our CORE, which is the foundation of our teaching. It tells the teachers what they need to teach, but it doesn't tell them how to implement such teaching.

I teach a morning and an afternoon kindergarten class in an eclectic school setting.

It is a new project approach to schools in that it has low, middle and high income families together in a very unique setting. It also makes for interesting teaching as the high income children have the opportunity for preschool, whereas the middle and low children usually do not, thus creating quite a diverse group of needs in the classroom. In kindergarten, we have so many areas to teach in such a short amount of time. We have learned as veteran teachers that we must take the content areas such as social studies and science and integrate our math and language curriculum around these content areas. We have been doing this for years and have been able to teach all of the CORE objectives successfully. The state has just changed our Science Core and we are in a quandary. We don't have the necessary items we need to teach this successfully and we don't have the funding to buy the materials we need.

My Project

With the changing of the Science Core, after teaching for 18 years, I had acquired all the materials I needed. Now we have to teach: 1) Weather Over Time 2) Make Simple Machines 3) Day/Night/Shadows, so I need to purchase fun manipulatives to provide for maximum learning in a fun environment. The Weather Bears will be for the children to dress for appropriate weather. The sand will be used in sand tables and put outside to see how sand erodes over time. The Dizzyland Fun Lands will provide for the making of simple machines. I need three (I will have to purchase more) to accommodate 55 children. The Solar System will provide a great visual teaching the difference between day and night and also help with shadows. All of the above will then be integrated into math and language core items. In our school, we take the science and social studies content and integrate the rest of the curriculum around it in order to get it all accomplished. Kindergarten needs to be fun and engaging.

When a CORE standard is changed, it is up to the teacher to come with fun and interesting lessons to teach this new core.

It is also necessary to have the manipulatives to teach with and this is where the donors can help . I do not have a budget to buy new manipulatives. Our district has a 30 million dollar deficit and many areas of the budget were severely cut. I can teach these new standards with excellent results with these items and I urge donors to please help make a difference.
