I Have to Write About What Happens in Science??

My students need lab notebooks to help them make strong observations and prepare for labs once they step into a college lab.

My Students

Students at our small, rural school are too used to "making do" with what materials we have on hand. When faced with higher-level college prep. expectations, they often have trouble moving from the basics to more advanced materials. Having a formal science notebook will give them needed practice.

In a ranching community like ours, life is pretty practical.

I work on getting students to dream big, but that can be hard when they are surrounded by chores, hard work, and others who have never left the small town. Many students are college-bound, but don't feel confident enough to try a science major. Using higher-level materials, newer technology, and working on current problems can help this, which is what I am striving to bring to them. The results are so encouraging! However, in our small town, our budget is severely limited and is getting cut more so in the coming year. New lab supplies are the last thing the administration is worried about--however, I find these needs crucial to the success of our students.

My Project

I am requesting new science lab notebooks for my students who would never be able to afford them on their own. These are the same notebooks used at larger schools, in college labs, and conform to professional expectations. If my students, who often tell me they never get anything new anyway, could use some of the same materials others take for granted, they could enter a college science lab feeling confident and qualified.

My students readily accept that they don't have the newest school with the newest equipment, but this shouldn't be their only lot in life.

I want them to be amazed at all they do (they are so talented!) and push themselves farther than they ever dreamed. Having new materials to work with such as science notebooks could give some of these students that extra burst to take their science excitement to the next level.
