Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our memories can build in us a faith and belief that we can do anything we work hard to do. Students, especially those in middle school, have to be reminded daily, to dream big and work hard.

I teach math to 7th and 8th grade students in an urban setting.

Our school is located in a high-needs community but my students do not use that as an excuse not to excel. As a matter of fact, they rock! The coming year will mark our third year offering high school algebra to middle grades students. We have had so much fun with this program. This year, four students graduated after being a part of the algebra club for three years. Even though I cried at the graduation, I know that they are going on to high school, prepared for every challenge they will meet. As was the case with all of my classes before, my students will need to make two years growth on average to be prepared for high school. Unfortunately, we only have 9 months to do it.

My Project

I have found that students are motivated when they can set goals and track their growth. I use student made scrapbooks to do that. We set small goals, that will be accomplished in four to six weeks. Students work in groups to complete projects during that time. We monitor growth and learning through regular written assessments. Students can even check off the standards on our classroom wall as they master each. We take pictures along the way. At the beginning of each new cycle, we sit down and review what we've accomplished using our scrapbook. It is a lot more fun than a worksheet review of concepts. Kids love it! They are inspired along the way to work hard so that their achievements will be included in the scrapbook. I started creating scrapbooks with my students last year and the process was so rewarding that I would like to expand it. This year I will create learning and achievement scrapbooks with both of my algebra classes as well as with our 7th grade students.

This project is so important to me because I have experienced what it is like to lose a student to the streets.

I have watched kids turn away from school and their families and decide instead to carry a gun and sell drugs in the park across the street from our school. I know I have to have a hook if I plan to keep my students interested in school enough to come everyday. And they have to be even more invested if I expect them to put in the hard work that it will take for them to succeed.
