My Students

"The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think." Bill Beattie, highlights a very powerful lesson as it relates to students.Using texts that draw connections between school and real life enables students to activate a more meaningful level of creative brain power

In urban Pennsylvania, my students very rarely get opportunities to see the long-term value of education in their lives.

Battling poverty, broken families, and overall challenging living conditions, my students are faced with many obstacles before they even come to school in the morning. In the area, public schools typically don't have enough money to provide materials that better engage students in the learning process. Our budget is enough to cover the mandated basil series and math texts. Students can be withdrawn from their learning which creates a troubling epidemic considering their young ages (8-11).

My Project

The Pact is a text that vividly details the journey of 3 young men from urban America and their promise to become everything their economical and familial situations contrasted-successfully educated men. This text is crucial in inspiring my students to take drastic measures as it relates to their current feelings about education. Having an opportunity to delve into such a relevant text will motivate my students to take steps in their own lives to ensure a better future for themselves and their families. The Pact shows that it can be done; it has been done. Who my students are today does not have to dictate who they become. Drawing lessons from such a meaningful text, can provide them with the self-confidence, the self-awareness to make better decisions now to impact their future.

Having an opportunity to read this text, The Pact, extends far beyond the four walls of my classroom.

The inspiration this meaningful journey of the main characters can provide is a lesson that students can take with them throughout life. As they begin to feel defeated, they can reassure themselves, it can be done. It has been done. You can play an integral role in the inspiration of my students by providing them with this donation.
