My students need a new netbook computer so that they can have a functional Listening Center that will support them in comprehending grade level academic material.

My Students

Imagine trying to learn Geometry from a textbook written in another language. Or trying to enjoy reading your favorite novel with all of the words spelled in reverse (Ecno nopu a emit). My students work this hard every day, trying to decipher texts that are far above their reading level.

My students are brilliant and joyous.

They attend an incredibly diverse comprehensive high school. They love to learn when they are able to, but have faced years of difficult education due to their learning disabilities. They deal with teachers who often do not understand them, and therefore do not support them. They are learning more and more to advocate for themselves in terms of their individual educational needs. Nevertheless, their are gaps in their education that remain glaring. Low levels of reading comprehension make accessing academic content in any class incredibly difficult, no matter how committed the student is.

My Project

One of the most useful tactics in my students' fight to learn is finding effective ways to comprehend difficult texts. Both myself and my instructional assistant devote hours to reading aloud, but it is not enough. I have seen my students ability to engage both in the classroom and with assignments go through the roof because they better comprehend a text. This computer will double the number of listening stations in my students' Listening Center. They will be able to learn to access (and download) recorded material online. Not only will this increase their comprehension, but it will allow them to learn early on to use the resources that will be crucial to their success in college.

This project is important because my students have an unquestionable right to learn.

They are currently being thrown headlong into reading assignments that they simply cannot do independently. Instead of learning to feel frustrated while reading, I want my students to experience the joy of making meaning from a text. This support will be something permanent, something they will be able to use no matter how difficult their class is, and something that will engage them consistently and deeply.
