My Students

My students love music! They love it so much they are willing to put up with sharing instruments in order to play. I will end this year with 139 students in band. We have 31 working school instruments. All but a few of my students need to use a school instrument.

Our school is an urban middle school with a thriving arts department.

Each year more and more students sign up for band. I have always made it a policy of mine not to turn away a student who cannot afford an instrument. Next year, however, we are facing a scheduling change. All middle schools in our district must go to block scheduling and the students must be in a class of single grades. This means I can no longer combine seventh and eighth grade students. This isn't really an issue except for my saxophone players. I currently have four saxophone students that are seventh graders who want to play next year. My problem is that I only have three saxophones. I will not turn any of them away, but if I can't get a saxophone one of them may have to switch instruments. All four are very successful and are diligent workers. I would hate to have to switch one of them.

My Project

I am requesting a student model alto saxophone. This instrument could be used by five students next year. A student in each of my five bands could play it using a separate mouthpiece. More importantly, I would have enough saxophones for each of my eighth graders. This saxophone could be used for many years by several students.

Middle school is a rough time for just about any kid.

My students have the additional obstacle of living in a very urban area where many of the families have been hit hard by this recent recession. An instrument for these families is a want not a need. For many of my band students, the band room is a place of comfort and acceptance. They almost breathe a sigh of relief when they enter the band room. With the help of your donation I can make sure every student has the chance to feel that way.
