Digging Deeper - Engaging Our Earliest Readers

My students need engaging science books at their reading level to practice early reading skills.

My Students

How frustrating to find a book that teaches about snakes or snails, but look at the text and realize the words are too sophisticated! For this reason, I would like to purchase multiple copy science-themed books written at the earliest reading levels.

As a Literacy Teacher, I work with primary students who have not yet mastered the complex set of concepts that make reading – and writing - possible.

The majority of my students are male, with a strong interest in the sciences. Unfortunately, many of the books available at our school, in their areas of interest, are written at a reading level not yet within their grasp.

My Project

Why multiple copies of the same non-fiction book? Text sets would offer the ability to have book clubs, where students who do not require specialized reading instruction read side by side with a less skilled partner. This peer modeling of fluent reading, while “digging deeper” in conversation about a shared interest, carry significant social and educational benefits.

Multiple copies of the same book would also provide an opportunity for one copy to go home with the child in his/her home reading bag.

Parents can then experience the joy of their child learning to read, without being pressured to return the book the very next day! What a gift to give our children... a lifelong love of reading!
