Grit Lit: Literature to Engage, Empower, and Inspire Teens

My students need post-it flags to highlight in the books, pens and sets of novels, including Silent to the Bone, Uglies, The Forest of Hands and Teeth and more, to facilitate the literature circle of real world reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are struggling readers in inner city Allentown, PA. Many are reading several grade levels below their own. I need engaging texts to pull them in and close the gap in their reading levels. The texts I have chosen will facilitate student-driven literature circles and extensive writing, too

My students are from a very low SES area of Pennsylvania.

The city is economically depressed and budget cuts have taken the power out of my hands to supply relevant and engaging texts for them. Many of these students have little positive influence to read at home and come from a background of little or no education. I have been using student-driven literature circles to begin to affect change in the lives of these students, but more, newer books are needed, and sadly I have no resources to get them. My students have tremendous potential, but need an investment made in them to help them realize their best potential.

My Project

These resources make a monumental difference in my classroom. Over the past year, using literature circles and Reading Apprenticeship with my students I have seen leaps in their reading, writing, and speaking abilities. Maybe more importantly, I have seen a change in the way they think about themselves and the world around them. The titles I have chosen for my expansion of literature circles are all about current issues and themes in society that will engage my students in critical thinking and discussions with their peers. These literature circles also provide the foundation by which I teach other skills like inferencing, summarizing, predicting, and determining author's purpose.

This is an imperative project to be funded.

I have been able to scrape by with district help the past two years, but now that help is gone. I need to keep this project on its feet because of the tremendous turnaround I have seen it create with my students. Donations to this project will be investments directly made to the futures of young, worthy students who live in adverse conditions but make the choice to come to school and through education try to improve their lives.
