My Students

I have used F.I.S.H. books for the last three years and they have worked great but the cost is going up and my salary isn't. FISH stands for Family Involvement Starts Here. My unorganized parents/students have loved it since it is easy to use for those students and parents with busy schedules.

I currently teach at a Title 1 school.

I have had 20-26 students in my class per year for the last 6 years. I currently changed to teaching first grade last year and these worked just as good as they did in kindergarten. I have children who come from a family of one or two working parents, some who struggle month to month to make ends meet. Since using the FISH book I have had better parent support. My children have learned the life skill of responsibility since using FISH books. It has become a very important part of their lives. It provides an opportunity to organize their homework and information of what is expected of them. It provides the necessary information for parents to know what is going on in our class each week. The parents can always refer to the FISH for any information they may need including teacher/school contact information, classroom guidelines and articles on how they can help their child in areas of reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

My Project

The materials that have been asked for are the basics for the FISH book. Without these supplies there is no FISH book. The notebooks are part of a way to organize the supplies the children need to do and complete their homework. The page protectors and cardstock provide the sections needed to complete the entire FISH book. The sections that help guide the students are the homework section and the calendar/newsletter section. The students can also refer back to the behavior log and student expectations for guidance in the expected behavior for the classroom and school section. There are two other sections that provide information for the parent/guardian. The Assessments and Student Goals section contains the students current monthly progress as well as the goal/benchmarks set by the district as well as the state. The Thoughts on Child Development section provides information to parents about reading, reading styles, reading strategies for readers and tips for homework.

My goal as an educator is to help simplify the daily lives of my students and their parents when it comes to homework and the FISH book has been extremely beneficial the last three years.

I have even promoted it in a class that I taught last year OECTA conference held each in our state. I have many teachers in the district that now love and use the FISH books though they may use a different acronym for their books. These books make me a much more organized teacher. Thanks for your help.
