My Students

Every day, students struggle to make connections from what they read in the classroom to what they experience in real life. Dave Eggers' writing style presents a compelling, contemporary sensibility which allows students to connect and understand the issues relevant to their world.

Our students struggle to engage in reading, writing and the global world outside of Maine.

The town in which our students live in is a blue collar, working class community where money is tight and the high school continues to use resources from twenty years ago. Because of our out-dated selection of books students are rarely interested in reading or learning about issues that affect their world.

My Project

Zeitoun is a riveting, exciting non-fiction account of Hurricane Katrina. Given the current state of the Gulf Coast this work is more relevant than ever. It is imperative that students understand the consequences of natural disasters in our country and how they affect us all. Zeitoun recounts the story of a family and their struggles with governmental decisions, environmental consequences all from a global perspective. We plan to examine this novel with our ninth graders as they learn about the science of Hurricane Katrina through a NOVA television program, personal accounts from people who still live in New Orleans, and news articles about the current oil spill crisis and its affect on the people of Gulf Coast. This project is a coordination between two ninth grade English teachers, therefore there are two projects of the same type on DonorsChoose to assure that all 140 students in our ninth grade classes receive the resources they need.

Funding this project will engage kids in reading, but more importantly it will create critical thinkers and global citizens.

It will change how our students view the world and therefore change how they participate in their community, country, and world. Funding this project will create active, engaged students and citizens--and there is no price too high for that outcome.
