Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Third grade in an inner city school, is a crucial year in each child's reading development. The eight year old develops from being considered a baby to being responsible to take and do well in standardized tests in reading and math. Reading strategies need to be taught explicitly through good books

My third grade students are inner city CT children who are bused to our magnet school.

They come from many different countries and backgrounds. There are eleven different nationalities represented in my class. Many are first generation immigrants whose families have come to America for freedom and educational opportunities.

My Project

Learning to read well is crucial to all third graders. I am requesting a selection of read aloud books for my students to enjoy listening to. Modeling good reading strategies through exciting literature is a sound beginning to develop life long readers. Each book will focus on explicit reading strategies to be taught. The four strands to be explored through shared reading instruction will focus on the four reading strands: Forming a General Understanding, Developing an Interpretation, Making Reader/Text Connections, and Examining Content and Structure. My students will learn how to become better young readers while gaining life-long reading strategies.

As an inner city school in these more difficult financial times, budget cuts don't allow for any new or extra materials.

The granting of my request for carefully chosen read aloud books will guide my explicit reading instruction each day, building stronger readers.
