My Students

Ride like the wind! Every child ought to experience the feeling of accomplishment and freedom by learning to ride a bicycle!

The students in our class experience severe developmental delays.

The ability range for our children is from toileting and feeding to reading. They are also the best class in the school! The capability of these students to show compassion, humor, playfulness, trust and the ability to learn is amazing. Our class is on a public elementary school site. We have access to all the same play areas of the school as the general students. Included in the play areas are expansive blacktops on which we can practice riding tricycles.

My Project

Our student’s delays affect all of their development including language skills, fine motor dexterity and physical ability. These children require a significant amount of time to master the skills they will need to help enhance their quality of life. One of these elements is physical development. As children grow their bodies require the kind of physical movement that will improve their bodily coordination. Bikes provide the important motion of synchronization of the legs that is required to pedal a bike. The physical strength and dexterity that our young students will gain will benefit them as adults. Our children love to ride bikes! When the weather permits we have spent time outside letting the kids take turns on our one older plastic bike. With the new trikes more of the children will be able to ride and the bikes will benefit many other students to come.

Physical coordination is one part of our curriculum.

It is a challenge to supply the equipment needed to fulfill this part of our student's Educational Plans. Our district and school is experiencing a great many cutbacks. Our Special Education funds no long can provide the larger more expensive items. Providing tricycles for our class with help to round out our physical education program which, will give our kids some physical skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.
