Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
TIME FOR KIDS is a powerful teaching tool, inspiring students to learn through non-fiction. I am continually seeking new ways to hook my fantastic first graders into reading. I have found this to be one of the best ways.
I teach first graders who are always eager to learn.
The majority come from homes without books and books at their reading level aren't available. Over 70% of my students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program and 65% are English Language Learners. Over 45% of my students qualify for Title I reading assistance and/or Special Education instruction.
My Project
TIME FOR KIDS magazine definitely increases my student's reading ability. They are able to read words above their grade level because it is high-interest and the students are motivated. The colorful photographs of animals draw them into reading the facts. My students read words and answer comprehension questions above their reading level because they are truly interested. They can't wait for the next magazine to arrive. After we have studied the magazine in class, the students are then able to share it with their families. It is wonderful connection between school and home.

I know and have seen the light in their eyes when they read something that is important and meaningful to them. You can make that difference in 28 first graders lives now and in their future. Thank you for your interest in providing the materials my students need to succeed.
