Spanish Literacy Leads to English Literacy

My students need 15 bilingual books and Rosetta Stone in English and Spanish to learn to read in Spanish (which helps them also learn English).

My Students

When I started working as an English as a Second Language Teacher four- years-ago, I had no idea that there were students and parents who were not literate in their native language. I mentioned it to my Spanish professor and we came up with an idea to help my students become literate in Spanish.

All of my students are eager to learn- they range from kindergarten to fifth grade.

They work hard learning English, but their lack of literacy in Spanish is holding them back. Their parents also lack the literacy skills to read to them in Spanish or English.

My Project

My students love books and it is inspiring to them to see both their native language and English used in bilingual books. We often have volunteer adults read the books in Spanish and the students or teacher reads the same book in English. The other non-Hispanic students are also very interested to learn a few Spanish words. The Spanish speaking students feel proud and validated by the experience.

My students and I would be so grateful to add bilingual books to the library and we would use them everyday.

Having Rosetta Stone Spanish available to students to bridge the two languages would also be a wonderful asset. Ultimately, we have seen them become better in English when Spanish literacy is enhanced.
