This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us give to our community by becoming published experts!

My 5th and 6th grade students are not passive receivers of information, they are active learners exploring the world around them by conducting their own research through field work, interviews, investigative reading and note taking.

Because resources in our community are scarce, much of our work is aimed at making a local contribution.

My Project

We need a camera, batteries and drawing supplies to photograph and draw the Phoenix canal system for a guidebook that they will publish. Students will undergo a semester of field work as they complete a cross disciplinary study of the Phoenix canal system. Students will use professional drawing and photography materials to gain an understanding of potential careers while increasing the quality of a guidebook that they will publish. Students will meet with photographers, hydraulic engineers, architects, botanists, archaeologists and descendants of the Hohokam in order to sketch different aspects of the phoenix canal system from different professional perspectives. Each student will use their drawing board for sketching as we are touring the canals. Students will be able to take turns photographing the subjects of their sketches so that further revision will be possible. Students will understand the importance of redrafting as they use light boxes to revise their previous drawings. Students will use their knowledge of science, math and social studies to explain and label their drawings and photos.

As a result of our project, students will contribute to the greater community in which they live.

These young professionals will be pioneers as they write and publish the first book that educates others about the waterways of Phoenix.
