My Students

How would you feel if you had things to say, but no voice to say them with?

My students are 13 and 14 years old, attend a special education school, are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and are non-verbal.

These students communicate using gesture, body language, facial expression and picture symbols. Also, thanks to DonorsChoose.org my selectively mute and literate students are now using three iPod Touch devices to communicate via text-to-speech software. The students simply type in a message and press "Speak It!" and they are heard. My other students are able to access the iPod Touch, but are unable to use it for communication purposes, because they utilize a symbol-based system, instead of a letter/word-based system. This is where Proloquo2Go comes in!

My Project

Proloquo2Go: "Communication on the Go for iPod Touch". This software is an innovate application created for non-verbal individuals of various diagnoses. It is organized to meet different communicative needs (e.g. Comments, Questions, Starters, Categories, etc.) The user selects the appropriate icon, based on the communicative environment, and constructs sentences and "speaks" accordingly.

DonorsChoose.org has been a tremendous avenue by which I have obtained three iPod Touch devices.

These devices have radically altered my students lives in ways that I never could have imagined. That was the first step... Now, I dream of affecting more student's lives, by not only putting an iPod Touch in their hands, with text-to-speech capabilities, but by purchasing the Proloquo2Go application that was created for my students.
