Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In one of my favorite movies, Charlotte's Web, Charlotte is asked by Wilbur, "Why words?", and Charlotte replies, "Because with words, you can change the world." So many of my students have very little happiness in their lives, and I want to give them every chance to be successful. Reading can do that!

Every year I have a class of sweet, loving, children who usually come from single parent homes.

These parents work long hours for little money and seldom have much time left over at the end of the day. Our school is Title I so we receive some federal funding, but the money runs out way before the needs. Students seldom have much help at home with reading or school work. So it is my task to give them every incentive and opportunity for success in the classroom. Having multiples books on their level to read will help them to master the reading levels covered in first grade. First graders must be able to read from a level 6 to level 16 to pass first grade. Many of them come to first grade still on a kindergarten level of 4 or below, and reaching a level 16 can be as daunting as climbing Mt. Everest.

My Project

I have picked book sets that cover levels my students will be reading at the beginning to the middle of the school year. These books will make it possible for each child to read text that they can understand. The excitement of mastering a new book gives students the courage to keep on trying even when it's hard. There are six books of each title which will allow students to work in small groups with peers who are also reading on the same level. By having a variety of books to choose from, they won't get bored and there will something for everyone.

As a new teacher, who doesn't make a lot of money, it is very frustrating to not have the materials that I need to give my students the best education possible.

Learning to read is so important, not just for school but for the rest of their life.
