My Students

William Butler Yeats - "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." Do you remember your first schooling experience? In our community, it is usually kindergarten. This first year of schooling is my opportunity to light that fire, but I need the right tools to do that.

I teach all subjects in an all day kindergarten in a high-need school.

I have 24 students. 87% of students that attend our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning, these students live at or below the poverty line. 19 of my students are learning English as a second language. Although many of my students begin school with outside barriers, you would never know it because they are the best bunch of kids you'll ever meet.

My Project

If you are familiar with the budget cuts in California, then you know that even getting the most basic supplies is tough. I teach at a high-need school where many of the parents do not have the resources to purchase the many needed supplies to start the year off with. Many parents purchase crayons which are the off-brand; if you're not a kindergarten teacher you may not be aware that many of these off brands do not color the true color. So teaching red, when the crayon color is more of a red-violet, is difficult. Students begin to become confused between purple and red. Having our own classroom paint would also be helpful, as our school often does not have the funds to purchase these "non-essential" learning tools. And painting is still part of kindergarten. 4 and 5 year olds also use so much glue, so asking for this much glue may last throughout the whole school year. Having folders so students can carry they're work between home and school will also be helpful.

Having the basic supplies to start the school year out right is so important.

My students should have the same supplies that more affluent schools have. Your donation will brighten the day of my 4 and 5 year old little learners.
