My Students

Did you love to sing when you were in second grade. So do my students. We start the day with songs and sing throughout the day. They are also practicing their reading skills and learning to read fluently as they sing. Our problem is the time wasted changing tapes and Cd's.

I have a group a wonderful students from all backgrounds.

They are bright and anxious to learn and love to be at school. Every year I look at these excited, bright eyed students and see so much potential. They really deserve the best that I can give them. We are a public school and unfortunately our school has been hit hard by cuts to education and our district is in huge financial trouble. Budgets are being slashed to the bone and class sizes are going to be increased next year with an additional 4 to 5 students in each class. We will need to be more organized than ever to make each minute of the day count.

My Project

My students need an IPOD Nano 8GB, a set of speakers for the IPOD and 6 student headphones that will also be used with the IPOD. The IPOD will allow me to download all my fabulous songs and stories onto one device, so I am not constantly trying to find the right CD or tape. Hunting through my music collection takes so much time. Sometimes I only want to use one song on each CD. I need a better way. Research has proved that fluency is very important in any reading program. Fluency is the ability to read accurately, quickly and expressively, with good phrasing and with good comprehension. What better way to do this than to listen to those who can model fluency. When we sing my students have a chart or song book to allow them to follow along. They get the chance to hear and see words over and over and hear them read or sung fluently. They get a chance to sing or read along without pressure. I get a chance to work on vocabulary words that they may not know and so vocabulary is increased as well. I know this works because I've seen my students who struggle make huge progress this way.

I will have more students to work with next year.

They need to finish the year reading on grade level. I need to find ways to work with all of them. The IPOD, speakers, and headphones will help us listen to recorded stories at reading groups. It will help us to practice reading by singing whenever we have a few minutes throughout the day. The materials that I am requesting will be a huge help to me and a real benefit to the students. We will be using them daily throughout this year and years to come. Thank you!
