My Students

Poetry is an outlet for people in pain and people in happiness. It's been proved that writing as a form of therapy is effective and a good way to document the progress of your soul.

My students are high school students that come from inner-city neighborhoods.

They come to school because they receive attention, love, and challenges from their teachers. This book would be for my seniors. We finally get a chance to express themselves. However, they want grammatically and thematically, because they have already passed the Regents. They are creative, full of stories, and emotional, which would make urban poetry a perfect fit for their creative writing need.

My Project

"The Rose That Grew From Concrete" is by Tupac Shakur, whose life and mysterious death still haunt us today. Although he is no longer with us, the power of his writing in song lyrics and poetry will remain timeless. The issues of his writing stems from urban street life and the relationships as a result from his lifestyle. My students would be immediately motivated and drawn to his words, as they already listen to his music tirelessly as a form of escape.

This urban poetry unit serves primarily as a means for my students to voice themselves on their life, having grown up in the city, dealing with the politics of government, the ups and downs of crime, the over-exposure of the youth, and the different lifestyle of being the urban teenagers.

My students need to learn how to express themselves in appropriate ways, and urban poetry would be the perfect form of therapy and non-violent communication on their issues.
